ABS-CBN SPORTS AIRS NATIONAL CHEERLEADING CHAMPIONSHIP ON HD

Friday, March 5, 2010

The National Cheerleading Championship (NCC) will finally crown the best cheerleading squad in the Philippines this Saturday (Mar 6) at the Ynares Sports Arena, to be aired live on high definition by ABS-CBN Sports at 2pm on Studio 23.

2009 champion University of Perpetual Help Dalta System will attempt to defend its title in NCC’s collegiate coed division against last year’s runner-ups, the University of the Cordilleras and Xavier University-Ateneo De Cagayan and formidable foes Central Colleges of the Philippines, Rizal Technological University, Polytechnic University of the Philippines-Taguig, and darkhorses De La Salle University, Jose Rizal University, and Ateneo De Manila University.

The live coverage came up after a recent partnership signed by ABS-CBN Vice President for Sports Peter Musngi and NCC President and COO Carlos Valdes III. The coverage will mark the first time in the entire cheerleading world for an event to be aired live and in high definition, another feat for ABS-CBN Sports.

"This is exciting for all fans of the sport of cheerleading. Even in the US, the competitions are aired on tape delayed basis,” Musngi said.

Emiliano Caruncho IV, NCC head for Business Development and Finance, said partnering with the country's premier sports broadcast organization will help promote the sport of cheerleading.

"We are happy that all fans of cheerleading - especially those in the provinces - finally see all the action up close and live. This will allow squads to showcase their elite skills to wider audience and help the sport grow even more," he said.

Recently, FilOil-Flying V General Manager and League Chairman Joey Guillermo also tied up with ABS-CBN Sports for the airing of five game days of the 2010 Fil Oil Flying V PreSeason Tournament on Studio 23, including the April 10 Opening Ceremonies at The Arena in San Juan City, the La Salle-Ateneo game, the Quarterfinals, Semifinals, and the June 13 Finals.

ABSCBN Sports is also the official broadcaster of premier collegiate leagues the University Athletic Association of the Philippines and the National Collegiate Athletic Association. It has also produced and broadcast international boxing, billiards, soccer, volleyball, and badminton tournaments.
