Velvet, the home of the biggest night in Hollywood, brings you straight to the red carpet of the biggest movie event of the year with the live telecast and complete coverage of the 82nd Annual Academy Awards. The most-anticipated awards show of the season can be seen on Velvet on March 8 starting with the red carpet and pre-show specials at 6:30am followed by the main show at 9:00am. It will also be aired live on ABS-CBN 2 at 9:30am.
One of the world’s most watched awards show, The 82nd Academy Awards - more popularly known as the Oscars - is an annual event presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to honor and recognize various professionals in the film industry, including writers, directors and actors who exemplify excellence in their field. The oldest award ceremony in media and one of the most prominent and respected award giving bodies, this year’s masters of ceremony will be award-winning funnymen Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin.
This year, the academy will honor extraordinary achievements in film, acting, writing and technical executions in 24 categories. Among the movies leading the nominee pack are Avatar and The Hurt Locker with nine apiece. Coincidentally, James Cameron and Katherine Bigelow, both up for a Best Director nod, are each other’s exes. Inglourious Basterds, Quentin Tarantino’s cinematic take on war and revenge, follows suit with eight nominations. Rounding out the forerunners are the already mutli-awarded Precious: Based on The Novel Push by Sapphire and the George Clooney starrer Up In the Air. For the acting categories, Sandra Bullock (The Blind Side), Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart), Mo’Nique (Precious) and Christophe Waltz (Inglourious Basterds) are among those favored to win, having received acting nods at the Golden Globes and Screen Actors’ Guild Awards. For the first time in Oscar history, the academy has nominated 10 films – “Avatar”, “The Hurt Locker”, “Inglourious Basterds”, “The Blind Side,” “District 9,” “An Education,” “Precious: based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire,” “A Serious Man,” “Up” and “Up in the air” – in the Best Picture category.
Being the star-studded event that it is, the line-up of presenters for this year include A-list celebrities. The list starts off with last year’s winners Sean Penn (Best Actor), Penelope Cruz (Best Supporting Actress) and Kate Winslet (Best Actress) and will be joined by comedy icons Steve Carell, Martin Short, Tina Fey, Queen Latifah, Tyler Perry and Ben Stiller and Sacha Baron Cohen. Hunks Channing Tatum, Jake Gyllenhaal, Bradley Cooper, Chris Pine, Ryan Reynolds, Sam Worthington, Gerard Butler and Keanu Reeves also serve as presenters for the night, among many other celebrities. This year’s Oscars special will be directed by Hamish Hamilton, the creative genius behind the 2009 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, Madonna’s Drowned World Tour and U2’s Elevation Tour, among others.
Plus, Oscar is putting on a youthful face, recruiting teen superstars Miley Cyrus, Zac Efron, Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart to serve as presenters on this year's kudocast. This will mark the second time Cyrus and Efron have served as Oscar presenters, and the first time out for "Twilight" stars Lautner and Stewart.
To kick off the Oscars fever, Velvet mounts an on-ground campaign, The Oscars Tribute Exhibit 2010. This photo exhibit, which made its debut last year, showcases memorable scenes from Oscar-winning movies, as interpreted by powerhouse teams made of actors, models, celebrities, stylists, makeup artists and photographers. This year, the theme is Most Memorable Couples and Dynamic Duos. The Oscars Tribute Exhibit will have its grand opening on March 4 (Thursday), 6:30pm at the Ayala Museum, Makati and will be open for public viewing on March 5-12 at the Lobby of Greenbelt 3 and on March 13-20 at the Eastwood Mall.
