BROKEN VOWS OF PAST SONAs ON “THE CORRESPONDENTS” #sona

Tuesday, July 28, 2009

ABS-CBN broadcaster Adrian Ayalin breaks down the broken promises of previous State of the Nation Addresses (SONA) a day after President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo delivers her last SONA this Tuesday night (July 28) on “The Correspondents.”

Every year, PGMA speak about defeating poverty in her report on the nation’s condition. But until now, millions of Filipinos remain poor. Instead of spending time on finding ways to alleviate this national predicament, the government seems to be more immersed in the issue of charter change.

Daria Abite is just one of the 27.6 million Filipinos languishing in poverty. The P600 that she and her husband earn in a week from selling clothes and collecting garbage is not adequate to support their family so they were forced to give up four of their eight children for adoption. She said a decent job and regular wage would haul them up from their situation.

Visit http://thecorrespondents.multiply.com to learn more about other national issues tackled by the program. Watch Adrian Ayalin as he rips the issues on PGMA’s SONAs this Tuesday night (July 28) on “The Correspondents,” right after Bandila on ABS-CBN.

Iskul Bukol (20 Years After) is the cinematic reunion of iconic comic trio Tito Vic and Joey and the movie metamorphosis of the famous sitcom Iskul Bukol which aired over IBC Channel 13 from 1978 to 1990 every Saturday evening. Spoofing Elvis Presley’s All Shook Up, sung by Vic Sotto is the sitcom’s intro song for Iskul Bukol which became the jumpboard where its characters and players became famous, garnered recall and spawned successful careers for its cast. There was Miss Tapia (Mely Tagasa), with her pa-sosyal sister Kukang. The late Bing Angeles was Mang Temi (Bing Angeles), the dark skinned cafeteria owner with loyal ward and busboy Redford (Redford White). Nido Fortified Science Discovery Center celebrates National Science Week

Wednesday, July 22, 2009

The Nido Fortified Science Discovery Center joins the celebration of the National Science Week in coordination with the Department of Science and Technology from July 20 to 26 with special lecture workshops that will help kids become better learners and encourage parents to take an active role in their kids’ development.

Two interesting lecture workshops that will discuss how kids can do better in school and how parents can encourage them to increase interest in learning science while having fun are slated for three successive Saturdays of July until August.

On July 18, 25, and August 1, learn how to create Mind Maps to help your kids organize their thoughts and understand concepts better using techniques developed by Tony Buzan, a world renowned guru on brain power and the inventor of Mind Maps, the most powerful and transformative thinking tool today.

The Buzan Power Learning Workshops will teach you how to create Mind Maps which will help you make notes to retain important information in a fun way, creatively organize the day, find solutions to a problem, or explain an idea or concept.

A Mind Map is a powerful graphic technique which provides a universal key to unlock the potential of your brain. It harnesses a full range of brain skills such as word, image, number, logic, rhythm, color, and spatial awareness in a single, uniquely powerful manner. This way, it gives you the freedom to roam the infinite expanses of your brain.

Making a Mind Map is easy to do— you just need a blank unlined paper, colored pens or pencils, your brain, and your imagination. When you use Mind Maps everyday, you will find that your life becomes more productive, fulfilled, and successful on every level.

Buzan has written more than 90 books on maximizing brain power, with sales in over 150 countries. His books have been translated into 33 languages. Among his latest books is Brain Child, which is written for parents who want to bring up smart kids.

The workshop sessions will be conducted by Ivy Marquez, a licensed Buzan instructor trained at the Buzan Center Asia in Singapore. “Parents who are actively involved in the learning and teaching of their children will find mind mapping a handy and effective tool to impart knowledge to kids,” says Marquez, who has a wealth of experience with kids in her 10 years of homeschooling and tutoring.

Marquez is a BA Mass Communication graduate from the University of the Philippines in Diliman. She worked as corporate communications officer at San Miguel Foods, Inc. and has served as Kid's Church Director in Victory Christian Fellowship for 15 years.

On July 25 at 10 am, Kids are from Jupiter: Nurturing Inquisitive Minds by Dr. Grace Shangkuan Koo, Ph.D, promises an interesting Saturday morning as it discusses the need to nurture children’s inquisitive minds at homes and in schools.

Dr. Shangkuan Koo will present how the human brain works such as the functions of the right and left hemispheres, and how teachers and parents should deal with children’s questions everyday. She will also discuss a child’s natural behavior like his need to move and play, as well as his insights and openness, sense of humor and wonder.

Today, parents and teachers face a lot of questions from kids who are curious about many things. For example, when a kid asks, “Why is the moon silver and round?” the best thing to do is welcome the question and try to answer it that will satisfy a kid’s curiosity. Ignoring or dismissing a child’s question as stupid would discourage the child and might dampen his innate curiosity.
After the seminar, Dr. Shangkuan Koo will welcome questions during an open forum. She will also conduct a creative thinking exercise for the participants.

Dr. Shangkuan Koo is an associate professor of educational psychology at the University of the Philippines in Diliman. She took her post-doctoral studies as a visiting scholar at Harvard University Graduate School of Education in 2003 and studied with Drs. Howard Gardner and Kurt Fischer. She contributes articles on education, parenting, classical music critiques, and travel stories to the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

To register for these sessions, please call the following numbers: 813-2732/03 and 830-2191 for the Buzan Power Learning Workshops and 727-8838 or 09178273124 for Kids are from Jupiter seminar.

YANGGAW THE FAMILY DRAMA HORROR THAT THE AUDIENCE WILL LOVE!

Catch the highly acclaimed horror movie Yanggaw at the IndieSine of the Robinson’s Galleria from July 29 to August 4, 2009!

Being a horror movie, this Cinema One Original movie of award-winning writer-director Richard Somes which stars acclaimed and multi-awarded actors such as Ronnie Lazaro, Joel Torre and Tetchie Agbayani and featuring a breakthrough performance by a newcomer Aleera Montalla its storyline is deeply rooted on family values and family life. Yanggaw is arguably the first Cinema One movie to tackle a dark yet very new side of what a family does, can go through, why and how it confronts and exorcises its own problems.

Filmmaker and writer Somes who anchors on the family being a complete community inside the home stresses that when he wrote the movie’s story approximately four years ago aims to make Yanggaw forego the clannish, grounded or sentimental attitude a family has over a member who becomes its prodigal, problem or deteriorated member. “Yanggaw is my statement to society. Yanggaw is a metaphor of addiction, bad deeds or problems a family member does na naapektuhan ang family niya; example a prodigal member who’s existence is already dark that he or she is unwanted already by his or her own family. Yanggaw will show what will happen to a family who has this type of a member. Kadalasan kasi sa pamilya kahit anong mangyari tanggap pa rin ang ganitong member. Disagreeable iyon eh. So ang isang member na bulok ang existence, if a family will keep him or her, the entire family will fall apart. Kung tutuusin mali iyon”.

This statement makes Yanggaw an intelligent horror movie because aside from its family values “where there are changes needed to be done to eventually effect change also to our society,” Somes says, “Yanggaw is my statement to society. Kadalasan kasi sa pamilya kahit anong mangyari tanggap pa rin ang ganitong member. Disagreeable iyon eh. So ang isang member na bulok ang existence, if a family will keep him or her, the entire family will fall apart. I want viewers to see na sa pamilya rin, mayroong hangganan sa ganitong klaseng family member, anak man or magulang. Compromises have to be done.”

Yanggaw’s plotline is a simple family with an extraordinary problem. Living in far-flung province and whose environment still believes in dark myths and superstitious beliefs that their life did not seem to advance, their simple lives became complex when their youngest member, the daughter is stricken with an illness no doctor could cure or diagnose. Suddenly they realize she is already… na-ya-yanggaw , slowly transforming into an aswang .

Take the entire family to a different viewing! Yanggaw will run at the Robinson’s Galleria IndieSine from July 29 to August 4. Celebrate with Cinema One's 15 years of evolution as a major contributing force in local cinema.

CAN RHAP SALAZAR FOLLOW CHARICE’S FOOTSTEPS?

Can Rhap Salazar be the next international kid wonder?

Get to know him more this Saturday (July 18) in the continuing month-long celebration of “Wonder Mom.”

Join Karen as she looks into the humble beginnings of Rhap, a young boy who once dreamt of becoming a famous singer and now slowly realizing his ambition after winning “Little Big Star.”

As early as 5 years old, Rhap’s mom already saw his potential that’s why she permitted her son to join Baranggay singing contests back in their home town. Winning ABS-CBN’s singing competition definitely served as his biggest break as it paved the way for him to appear on various television shows.

Now, Rhap is in the United States to represent the country in the World Championship of Performing Arts. Will he bring home the championship and become an international sensation just like his best friend Charice Pempengco?

Meanwhile, if Rhap dreamt of something big for himself, mommy Marife selflessly dreamt for her beloved 4-year old son Carlo who is slowly losing sight on his left eye. Despite the challenges in raising two children and three of her siblings, Marife worked hard 24/7 just to provide for her family and only want nothing but the best for all of them.

With her courage and strength as a wonder mom, Karen will reward her by granting her wish and taking her son Carlo to an eye specialist.

Fr. Joey Faller confesses on “Probe Profiles”

Tuesday, July 14, 2009

He makes the blind see, the lame walk, the bedridden up and about. He is not the Lord —but this healing priest, Fr. Joey Faller, is almost divine for his thousands-strong followers.

This Wednesday (July 15) on “Probe Profiles,” Cheche Lazaro gets behind his cloak and demystifies the priest, revealing a healer who himself is wounded and humanly weak.

Bringing us where the healer dwells, Lazaro treks the 300-step grotto of Faller’s Kamay ni Hesus in Lucban, Quezon, and engages him in a no-holds-barred exchange about his life as a healing priest, the source of his power, the temptations he has failed to resist and the cross he now bears. Unguarded, Faller talks about the familiar tug-of-war between the desire to remain faithful to his mission and the undying allure of money, lust, and fame.

“Probe Profiles” is replayed Fridays at 3 a.m. and Sundays at 1:30 p.m. on the ABS-CBN News Channel (ANC SkyCable channel 27). The episodes may also be viewed for free—in premium quality—on www.probetv.com. See Cheche Lazaro as she presents Fr. Faller’s confession on her weekly investigative show, “Probe Profiles,” on Wednesday (July 15) after “Bandila” on ABS-CBN.

Food Sufficiency Program Bayan-anihan Launched

Thursday, July 9, 2009

A Chinese philosopher once said, “Give a man a fish and he’ll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will eat for the rest of his life.”

The same concept is the inspiration behind Bayan-anihan—Gawad Kalinga’s (GK) food sufficiency arm, which was established to eradicate hunger by empowering poor families to produce their own food via backyard or organic farming. It advocates for a hunger-free Philippines under the battlecry, “Goodbye Gutom! Empower the poor. Eradicate hunger.”

As its main objective, Bayan-anihan (BA) aims to launch 2,500 farms in the next three years to feed at least 500,000 people for life with the aid of multi-sectoral partnership among GK and the Department of Agriculture (DA), agricultural schools, local government units (LGUs), non-government organizations (NGOs), major corporations and the youth.

During its soft launch last March, a ceremonial planting day was held simultaneously in GK communities all over Luzon— including Metro Manila, Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, and Southern Tagalog.

Two months since its first planting day/soft launch, 24 metric tons have already been harvested from 115 GK-BA farms. This bountiful yield serves as a great opportunity to celebrate Bayan-anihan’s formal launch to the public on July 15 with a big ceremonial harvest. At the same time, it signals the beginning of the nationwide fight against starvation in the country through its upcoming activities and programs.

On this day, the official Bayan-anihan song and website will be unveiled, and there will be speeches by Sec. Arthur Yap, Department of Agriculture Secretary; Tony Meloto, Gawad Kalinga founder; and John Concepcion, Unilever RFM Ice Cream–Selecta Managing Director and CEO. A parade of vegetables and fruits will be staged by the Gawad Kalinga community, and outstanding Bayan-anihan caretaker teams will be honored.

Young adults, teens, and children can play games, while the adults will have a cooking session using the harvested vegetables. As a fitting end to the ceremonial harvest day, delicious and nutritious meals made with the harvested vegetables will be shared by everyone.

Since this is a multi-sectoral movement, the national and local government units, schools, corporations and individuals, and the NGO’s, and the youth can be involved in several ways.

The government can help out by providing infrastructure, land and water, and giving funds for farm inputs. Schools can make training programs as part of the curriculum for faculty and students and can even train the community people as part of their practicum. Any corporation or individual, on the other hand, can sponsor or adopt a farm for P150,000, which will be enough to feed 30 families. They can also participate during planting days, salu-salo affairs, and other activities. Other NGO’s can also help by leading the implementation of this program in their communities using the Bayan-anihan model.

Lastly, the youth can lend a hand by training and by being one with the community through the planting and harvesting activities. With the youth’s help in sustaining the training, the poor will never have to go hungry again, and it will espouse self-sufficiency for the next generations.

By supporting Bayan-anihan, everyone can develop and polish values like self-worth, hard work, excellence, bayanihan (spirit of teamwork), and care for health and the environment.

Through efforts like this, the seeds of hope are planted in the hearts of many Filipinos. For sure, we can anticipate a prosperous and a food-abundant Philippines in the future.

Join Bayan-anihan and call the Bayan-anihan hotline at 09284382838 or visit the website, http://bayan-anihan.com to do your part in helping Pinoys bid farewell to hunger!

Bite by Bite: All You Need to Know About Hotdog Eating Contests

Monday, July 6, 2009

So you think that finishing a hotdog in less than 5 minutes is already mean feat? Think again.

In 2007, 24 year-old Joey Chestnut won the 92nd Annual Nathan’s Hotdog Eating Contest. His winning form? Downing 66 hotdog sandwiches in 12 minutes.

Joey Chestnut is but one of the rising superstars in the field of competitive eating. Competitive eating is an activity in which participants compete against each other to consume large quantities of food in a short time period. Contests are typically less than 15 minutes in length, with the person consuming the most food being declared the winner.

And no, this isn’t a fast food fad that’ll fizzle out quickly. In fact, informal eating contests probably date back thousands of years. The International Federation of Competitive Eating (IFOCE) even observes that “30 hungry Neanderthals in a cave fighting over a rabbit” probably constitutes the first instance of competitive eating. Meanwhile, in terms of magnitude, the United States, Japan and England have embraced it the most.

“It’s almost like a sport with its pageantry and play-by-play commentary. But what really drives home the comparison is the skill, discipline and training shown by participants,” says 7-Eleven’s Food Service Division Manager Armi Andrade.

Competitive eaters or "gurgitators," say that just like bodybuilders or marathoners, their success results from intensive training. But far from them requiring just physical training, they need mental preparedness as well. In fact Hall Hunt, a structural engineer currently ranked 9th in competitive eating, takes an academic approach by studying food density and identifying which liquids are best in breaking down food. He notes for example that lemonade cuts down the grease on French fries.

The rules that govern an eating contest are pretty simple. The food to be eaten is either weighed, like cabbage, or cut into uniform pieces, in the case of a pizza-eating contest, for example. No one is allowed to start eating until an official gives the signal. Competitors can eat the food however they want, either breaking it into pieces or just shoving it in. They can dip the food into a liquid (usually water) to make it softer.
“Yes, it’s fun to watch and it’s undeniably entertaining” quips Andrade. And now, Filipinos can showcase their ingestion prowess with the biggest competitive eating event in the country – 7-Eleven’s Big Bite Match.

“Filipinos love to eat and we also respond well to challenges,” says Andrade. “This combination creates an ideal environment for competitive eating. We aim to provide Filipino competitive eaters a venue that can be recognized in an international scale to showcase their one of a kind skill.”

Until August 15, Filipino eating machines can go to the nearest 7-Eleven store in their area and avail of the Big Bite Pack that contains five hotdog sandwiches of their choice and one Big Gulp. To start the journey to hotdog munching supremacy, participants should finish the five sandwiches in the shortest time possible. The fastest eaters from 7-Eleven stores nationwide will compete in a grand culminating event where only one will be proclaimed champion and will receive Php 500, 000 in cash.

“This is our first step in infiltrating the global competitive eating arena and we believe that Filipinos, as we’ve proven in other fields, can wow the world with their appetite for victory,” ends Andrade.

7-Eleven is celebrating its 25th year of being the largest convenience store chain in the Philippines.
